After 40 investors rejected Jeff Bezos’ Amazon pitch, his parents offered $245,573 of their retirement savings

Long before Amazon dominated global commerce and topped the Fortune 500, it was a precarious startup that most seasoned investors viewed with skepticism. In the mid nineties, Jeff Bezos spent months pitching his vision for an online bookstore to dozens of potential backers, seeking small investments to reach a million dollar goal. While some showed interest, many walked away, leaving Bezos facing a steep climb to secure the capital necessary to launch his ambitious project.

Facing these odds, Bezos turned to his parents, Jacklyn Gise and Miguel Bezos, though he did so with a heavy dose of caution. He warned them explicitly that the venture was incredibly risky and admitted there was perhaps only a thirty percent chance of success. He famously told his father that he wanted them to understand the danger because he didn’t want any tension during future Thanksgiving dinners if the money vanished. Despite these warnings and the fact that Mike Bezos initially had to ask what the internet even was, his parents decided to trust their son over the statistics.

They handed over 245,573 dollars from their retirement savings, a sum that represented a significant portion of their life nest egg at the time. As Jeff Bezos later reflected, his parents weren’t necessarily betting on the concept of e-commerce or the viability of an online bookshop; they were simply betting on him. That leap of faith paid off almost instantly as orders began flooding in from across all fifty states and dozens of foreign countries shortly after the site opened in 1995.

By the time Amazon went public in 1997, the trajectory of the family fortune had changed forever. What started as a modest injection of retirement funds evolved into one of the greatest financial returns in history. Through various holdings and foundations, those early shares grew into billions of dollars, allowing the family to pivot toward massive philanthropic efforts via the Bezos Family Foundation. Looking back on those uncertain days, Mike Bezos modestly described himself as an angel investor who happened to save a few pennies for his son.
