The M5 Ultra Mac Studio tears through our benchmark tests

Apple has officially released the newest iteration of the Mac Studio, and the top end configuration is nothing short of outrageous. While the lineup begins with a more accessible M5 Max model starting at 2,499 dollars, the real story is the M5 Ultra. In its most aggressive configuration, featuring a 36 core CPU, an 80 core GPU, and a staggering 256 gigabytes of RAM, the machine carries a price tag of 12,299 dollars. This isn’t a tool for your average home user or casual creator; it is built specifically for AI developers and high end visual effects houses that demand absolute peak performance.

In early benchmark testing, the M5 Ultra didn’t just beat previous generations—it tore through them. When compared to a similarly specced M3 Ultra from last year, the new chip shows roughly a 30 percent increase in single and multicore CPU tests. However, where it truly separates itself is in GPU rendering. A Cinebench test showed scores jumping by 63 percent over its predecessor. To put that speed into perspective, a standard Premiere 4K video export took only about 40 seconds to complete, meaning users could barely leave their desks for a coffee before the task was finished.

Despite these internal leaps in power, Apple has opted for continuity in design. The chassis remains identical to the model introduced in 2022, maintaining the same array of high speed ports and the beloved SD card slot. For professionals who rely on physical connectivity while pushing massive amounts of data through their systems, this consistency is likely welcome news given how volatile hardware designs can be.

Looking forward, much of the conversation surrounding this release centers on artificial intelligence. Apple describes the M5 Ultra as a monumental step for AI workloads, moving beyond traditional content creation into local large language models and complex generative tasks. As testers begin to push this silicon to its breaking point to find where it finally slows down, one thing is clear: we have entered an era of computing where raw power is extending far deeper into the stratosphere than ever before.
