Honor has officially unveiled its latest flagship lineup in China, headlined by the ambitious Magic 9 Pro Max. This new device marks a significant shift in design philosophy for the company, most notably through a high profile partnership with legendary cinema camera manufacturer Arri. The influence is immediately apparent in the phone’s revamped rear camera island, which mimics the classic three lens turret look of the 1937 Arriflex 35 and features a tactile knurled texture around the primary lens.
Beyond the aesthetics, the collaboration brings professional grade cinematography tools to a handheld device. Users gain access to Arri LogC3 shooting and a suite of specialized color presets known as LUTs, allowing for cinematic grading usually reserved for film sets. Hardware enthusiasts will find plenty to admire with a massive 200 megapixel main sensor paired with an equally powerful 200 megapixel telephoto lens offering 3.5x zoom. To round out the production value, Honor added a cinema grade directional microphone and a versatile square format selfie camera capable of switching between portrait and landscape orientations effortlessly.
Under the hood, Honor utilized a redesigned internal layout to make room for one of the largest batteries seen in a modern flagship. By optimizing the space saved from the new camera housing, they managed to fit an enormous 8,800mAh battery featuring high silicon content for better efficiency. Powering the entire experience is the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor. When questioned about choosing such a powerful chip despite not utilizing every single technical capability like certain ultra high frame rate recordings, Honor representatives explained that their priority was providing a consistently smooth user experience rather than simply chasing benchmark scores.
While these devices are currently making their debut exclusively in China, those living elsewhere won’t have to wait forever. Honor has already confirmed that an international rollout is planned for global markets, though specific dates and pricing details remain under wraps for now. For consumers looking for a bridge between a smartphone and a professional filming tool, the Magic 9 Pro Max appears positioned as a serious contender once it hits Western shores.
