iPhone 18 Pro Max’s battery is so big Apple had to add this new feature to iOS 27

Apple is pushing the boundaries of mobile power with the release of the iPhone 18 Pro Max, but that massive leap in battery life comes with some unexpected logistical hurdles. According to a newly released support document, the physical size of the battery has pushed the device’s capacity beyond 20 watt-hours. While this is great news for users who want to spend less time tethered to a wall outlet, it creates a headache for global logistics, as many countries impose strict shipping regulations on single-cell batteries that exceed that specific energy threshold.

To navigate these legal requirements without sacrificing performance, Apple has implemented an innovative firmware solution. From the moment the phone leaves the factory until it reaches the customer, a software lock keeps the battery capacity artificially limited to under 20 watt-hours. Once the user activates their new device for the first time, this digital ceiling is lifted, granting full access to the enormous power reserve promised by the hardware.

However, this regulatory dance doesn’t end once you open the box. Because those same shipping laws apply whenever a device is sent via mail—whether for repairs, trade-ins, returns or gifts—Apple has introduced a brand new tool called Prepare to Ship within iOS 27. Found deep in the settings menu under General and Transfer or Reset iPhone, this feature manually discharges the battery and sets a hard charge limit to ensure the device remains compliant with international safety standards during transit.

Users should be aware that using this function may cause their phone to feel warmer than usual as it rapidly sheds energy to reach a safe shipping level. Depending on how much charge is left in the tank, this process could take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. Only after the system confirms it is safely below the threshold will a red Ready to Ship badge appear in settings, signaling that it is finally safe to drop the powerhouse phone into a mailing envelope.
