Live updates: Trump dismisses concerns about rapid AI development

President Donald Trump has dismissed growing anxieties surrounding the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, labeling warnings about the technology as a hoax. While several prominent AI executives have recently advocated for a slowdown in development to ensure safety, Trump suggested that the primary safeguard required for managing such powerful tools is simply having a president with a high IQ.

Despite his dismissive tone toward the risks, the administration appears to be moving forward with formal discussions on the matter. House Speaker Mike Johnson announced that Trump intends to summon leading AI platform executives to the White House for a deliberate conversation. According to Johnson, the goal of the upcoming meeting is to discuss corporate responsibility regarding safety and determine exactly what role, if any, the federal government should play in overseeing these systems.

Speaker Johnson emphasized that maintaining a competitive advantage over China remains a top priority for the United States. When asked if the proliferation of AI poses a genuine threat to American society, Johnson firmly denied it, arguing instead that harnessing the technology will benefit both Americans and the rest of the world. This stance puts him at odds with figures like former President Barack Obama, who has urged Democrats to center their legislative agenda around addressing AI challenges.

While specific dates for the summit have not yet been finalized, sources indicate that plans are currently in motion for late this week or early next. As the industry continues its breakneck pace of innovation, these meetings will likely serve as a bellwether for whether the current administration favors light touch deregulation or more structured oversight in one of the most disruptive technological shifts in history.
