Trump blasts interest rate uptick and claims US is doing so well that rates ‘should be 1%, or less’ – live

Donald Trump lashed out at the Federal Reserve following its latest decision to raise interest rates, arguing that the United States possesses such strong credit that borrowing costs should be drastically lower. Speaking to reporters upon his arrival for a campaign rally in North Carolina, the president suggested that rates should ideally sit at one percent or even lower. He claimed that the current financial standing of the country justifies having the lowest interest rates in the world and suggested that a different approach to fiscal management could allow the government to wipe out national debts entirely.

During the exchange, Trump defended Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, denying that Warsh had defied him by voting in favor of the rate hike. The president explained that he actually advised Warsh to align with the rest of the board simply because any opposing vote would have been meaningless given the composition of the group. He described the Federal Reserve board as hostile and overly political, asserting that their decisions are driven by partisan motives rather than economic necessity. According to Trump, these recent hikes are essentially a political attack directed specifically at him.

Despite his sharp criticism of the institution’s direction, Trump maintained his confidence in Warsh, though he lamented that his appointee is hampered by a board appointed by previous administrations. He framed the struggle as one between his vision for low-cost growth and a rigid bureaucracy of politicians who are doing the wrong thing for the economy. This confrontation highlights an ongoing tension between the executive branch and the central bank over how to balance inflation control with aggressive economic expansion.
