Armed person confronts Ohio gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton at event, campaign says

A chaotic scene unfolded at the annual Canfield Fair in Mahoning County on Sunday afternoon when an armed individual lunged at Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton. According to a spokesperson for the campaign, the attacker caused injuries to several bystanders before law enforcement intervened. While Dr. Acton herself escaped physical harm, witnesses reported that the former state health director used her medical training to remain on the scene and provide aid to one of the wounded individuals following the confrontation.

The incident took place at the Mahoning County Democratic Party tent, sparking immediate condemnation from across the political spectrum. Campaign representative Addie Bullock stated that Acton and her husband are grateful for the swift actions of officers and expressed a firm resolve to stand against hate and vitriol. Christopher Anderson, chair of the local Democratic Party, described the act as reprehensible and called for leaders from all parties to denounce such violence during what should have been a routine community outreach event.

Support for Acton arrived quickly from unexpected quarters, including current Governor Mike DeWine and Secretary of State Jon Husted. Both Republicans emphasized that threats of violence have no place in public discourse, with DeWine noting that he had personally spoken with Acton after learning she was safe. Even Acton’s opponent in the upcoming general election, Vivek Ramaswamy, issued a statement through his team declaring that candidates must be able to meet voters without fear of attack.

As investigators from local police and the Ohio State Highway Patrol work to identify a suspect and determine the full extent of the casualties, the atmosphere surrounding the tight gubernatorial race has shifted toward a somber reflection on political volatility. With polls indicating a close contest between Acton and Ramaswamy, officials are urging calm as they seek justice for those injured during Sunday’s disruption at the fairgrounds.
