The GOP’s underlying midterm problem: From the Politics Desk

While many political analysts focus on inflation and overseas conflict as the primary hurdles for Republicans heading into the midterms, the actual crisis may be one of credibility. According to analysis from Jonathan Allen, the GOP is struggling not just with bad news, but with the weight of unfulfilled promises. During his 2024 run, Donald Trump centered his platform on ending inflation and avoiding foreign entanglements. However, with prices continuing to climb and conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, and Iran remaining unresolved, those core pillars of his brand have become liabilities.

The fallout extends beyond mere policy failures; it is beginning to erode the enthusiasm of the Republican base. In conversations with voters along Interstate 80 through swing districts, disillusionment was evident even among some registered Republicans who feel let down by these broken pledges. While Trump himself is not on the ballot this cycle, his role as the party’s chief cheerleader is compromised when a significant portion of independent voters—and some within his own camp—no longer fully trust his track record.

This creates a precarious situation for GOP candidates in critical battleground states. For years, Trump has served as the ultimate validator for candidates seeking office, yet that influence wanes if he becomes a lightning rod for criticism regarding current economic and global instability. Despite his requests for voters to treat these races as if he were personally on the ballot, Democratic strategists are eager to lean into that narrative. Without a dramatic shift in results on inflation or foreign policy, Republican candidates may find themselves wishing they could distance their campaigns from their leader’s legacy entirely.
