Privacy enthusiasts have long been tethered to Google Pixel hardware if they wanted to run GrapheneOS, the gold standard for secure, de-googled mobile operating systems. That is about to change as the GrapheneOS Foundation prepares to expand its official support to Motorola smartphones. While the rollout begins with high-end slab flagships, the most exciting development is the planned expansion to Motorola’s foldable lineup, including the Razr Fold and Razr Ultra. This move would mark the first time a flip phone has officially hosted the hardened OS.
The delay in bringing this partnership to life comes down to strict hardware requirements. According to a recent announcement on Mastodon, current Motorola handsets almost meet Graphene’s rigorous security standards but still fall short regarding secure element integration and hardware memory tagging. The foundation believes these gaps will be bridged by the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chips, placing the target for full implementation on Motorola’s 2027 device cycle.
This shift represents a significant pivot for GrapheneOS, which has exclusively supported Pixels until now. Interestingly, the foundation noted that maintaining Pixel support has become increasingly difficult due to changes within the Android Open Source Project. In contrast, Motorola is reportedly taking a proactive role in the process, handling much of the heavy lifting required to port GrapheneOS onto their specific hardware architecture.
While budget-conscious users might hope for similar support on cheaper models, those options remain distant goals. For lower-end devices to qualify, Qualcomm must improve security features in its mid-range chips and Motorola must commit to longer software lifecycles. Currently, some entry-level Moto phones offer only limited updates, whereas Graphene seeks partners capable of providing stability over several years. For now, those wanting a private foldable will need to save up for a premium flagship.
