Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate Abdul El-Sayed issued a formal apology to the state’s Jewish Democratic Caucus on Saturday, attempting to smooth over tensions following remarks he made about a violent attack on a Michigan synagogue earlier this year. Speaking to reporters after addressing the group at a party convention in Lansing, El-Sayed expressed regret for words that critics argued justified an act of hate. He stated that his comments may have been misconstrued and offered a sincere apology to anyone who felt hurt by his phrasing.
The controversy stems from an incident in March when Ayman Mohammad Ghazali rammed his vehicle into Temple Israel, a synagogue in a Detroit suburb, and opened fire on a security guard before taking his own life. At the time, El-Sayed released a video condemning the violence but noted that hurt people hurt people, referencing the fact that Ghazali had recently lost four relatives in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon. While El-Sayed maintained he was merely providing context for the tragedy, opponents claimed he was excuseing the attacker’s motives.
Reflecting on the backlash during his appearance this weekend, El-Sayed admitted that offering such context was inappropriate given the circumstances. He told reporters that it is never right to trample on someone else’s pain and acknowledged that there was simply no place for those explanations during a moment of crisis.
This move comes as part of a broader effort by El-Sayed to unify the Democratic base ahead of a high stakes general election against Republican nominee Mike Rogers. After winning a contentious primary victory over Representative Haley Stevens, El-Sayed has faced recurring allegations of antisemitism and scrutiny over his public associations. With control of the Senate hanging in the balance, the candidate appears eager to put these controversies behind him and pivot toward a unified campaign strategy.
